Special Olympics Australia has launched a new eLearning course on the Inclusive Sport Academy, designed to support officials in delivering more inclusive sporting experiences for athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism.
Officiating Inclusive Sports Competitions for Athletes with Intellectual Disability and/or Autism is the first dedicated education resource of its kind in Australian sport, providing practical guidance for officials working across both Special Olympics and mainstream sporting environments.
Developed in alignment with the Australian Sports Commission’s Modern Approach to Officiating, the course recognises the important role officials play in shaping positive, safe and meaningful participation experiences for athletes.
The course explores key areas including communication strategies, divisioning, meaningful involvement in Unified Sports, adapting rules with purpose, understanding behaviours and creating inclusive competition environments.
Importantly, the course has been designed not only for Special Olympics officials, but also for officials from community and mainstream sports who engage with athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism through inclusive competitions, school sport, club programs and representative pathways.
Special Olympics Australia CEO Jamie O’Connor is eager to see officials from both Special Olympics and mainstream sport engage with the new eLearning course.
“Special Olympics Australia has long been a leader in inclusive sport practice, and this course is an important step in supporting officials across all levels of sport to feel more confident and capable in inclusive competition environments,” O’Connor said.
“Whether officials are involved in Special Olympics competitions, school sport, community sport or mainstream pathways, these resources can help people better understand the experiences and needs of athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism.
“By building practical skills in communication, inclusion and participant-centred officiating, we can help create spaces where every athlete feels respected, supported and able to compete with confidence.”
The course reflects a growing need across Australian sport to better equip officials with the confidence and practical strategies required to deliver inclusive sporting environments.
Rather than focusing solely on technical rule enforcement, the course encourages officials to adopt a participant-centred approach – balancing equity, consistency, communication and inclusion to create environments where all athletes can thrive.
The self-paced online course includes video content, real-world officiating scenarios, interactive quizzes and AI-supported workbook activities designed to encourage reflection and practical application in competition settings.
Inclusive officiating is essential to growing participation in sport and ensuring athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism experience competition environments that are respectful, equitable and enjoyable. This course represents another important step in providing officials with the tools to deliver these environments.
The course is now available through the Inclusive Sport Academy, developed in partnership with Playbk Sports.
The award-winning Inclusive Sport Academy is proudly supported by Gallagher and has recently surpassed 10,000 registered learners.
End.

About Special Olympics Australia
Special Olympics Australia is part of a global movement using the power of sport to build a more inclusive world for people with intellectual disability and/or autism. At Special Olympics Australia, we believe sport can do more than inspire. It can shift culture. It can shape policies. It can change behaviours. And it can change the way the world sees ability.
All year round, we offer Olympic-type sports training and competitions for children and adults of all ages and ability levels – from weekly local grassroots activities, to State, National and World Games. But what we do goes far beyond sport. We break down barriers and we ignite confidence. We are a movement where no one is left behind, and everyone plays, competes, and thrives.
