Playbk Sports Kickstarts The First Queensland Government SportX Connect Series for 2023

by Mar 2, 2023News

A 15,000km commute isn’t for the faint of heart.

Indeed, the tyranny of distance has been somewhat abridged with everything in 2023 now available ‘via Zoom’. However, despite the uptake of digital communication tools (that had existed for quite a while pre-Covid by the way) sometimes you just need people in the room.

That’s what Queensland Government’s SportX Connect Series thought when they requested the expertise of Playbk Sports North American Chief Operating Officer (COO) Rick Burton to deliver the keynote for the first Connect Series event of 2023 – SportsTech Changing the Game: A Global Perspective.

Burton signed on as an equity partner and North American COO of Playbk Sports in July, 2022 and as well as spearheading the growth strategy on his home turf for the business, Burton’s global sports marketing experience has been in high demand in his second home.

“I consider myself an honorary Aussie.” Burton mused.

“So, to be invited back ‘home’ by SportX to help the Queensland sporting sector set sail on the Green and Gold Runway and provide some insights on the Olympic movement and current trends in sports technology is exciting.”

Rick Burton, COO at Playbk Sports

Burton has a long affinity with Australian sport. He was the Commissioner of the National Basketball League (NBL) from 2003 – 2007, is COO for Playbk Sports and an advisor for XV Capital.

He has also led several study tours for students from Syracuse University, where he has been the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) of one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Power 5 Conference Schools.

As a practicing sports management academic, regular contributor to global sports publications Sports Business Journal and Sportico and often requested keynote speaker at sports management conferences, Burton is well placed to share his knowledge of where technology in sport is heading and why Australian businesses are poised to benefit from this growth.

“I’m fortunate that I’m able to work on a number of different sport tech projects with people doing very interesting things. From E-sports and AI to 6G and fan engagement technology, there are so many great things happening globally and I’m very eager to share what I have learnt with the group at the SportX event” Burton went on to say.

Sports Tech Changing the Game – A Global Perspective will be held at The Precinct in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley from 3pm – 6pm on Tuesday, March 14.
